Deep Tissue Massage
Return to optimum health
What is Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage (DTM) is a technique used by manual therapists that uses firm, penetrating pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.
Traditional massage is designed to be relaxing and gentle on the muscles. DTM on the other hand is designed to break down stiff and tight muscles in an attempt to alleviate aches and pains.
DTM can be used all over the body; whether you suffer from tension in the neck and shoulders or more of an ache in the pelvis and legs.
This type of therapy is complimentary to that of a chiropractor and a physio.

How is Deep Tissue Massage used?
DTM is used to break down adhesions, areas of tension, fibrous muscles (knots) and scar tissue within muscles and connective tissue.
These dysfunctional muscles can cause local muscle pain, referred pain, muscular imbalance, poor circulation, reduced range of motion, poor flexibility and inflammation.
Osteopaths use DTM in conjunction with other techniques to relieve muscle aches and joint irritation.
Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Even with DTM there are different applications and techniques; each one designed to create a certain change within soft tissue.
DTM will always be used on a specific area with the intention of changing the muscle quality to achieve a specific goal. The following is a list of potential benefits exhibited with deep tissue massage:
- Improved blood flow
- Improved flexibility
- The break down and repair of scar tissue
