Headaches

Headaches are extremely common. According to the NHS, 10 million individuals in the UK suffer with headaches on a regular basis - and these are just the reported cases. This makes for a very common health problem in the UK.

Almost all individuals have suffered with some form of headache in their lifetime. It is easy to think that this common symptom is "normal" or simply "a part of life", but there is no need for individuals to think this. For some people headaches can be a daily, debilitating occurrence that severely inhibits their quality of life.

Many classifications of headaches exist, each with their own causes and symptoms. Some of the more well known types include: tension, migraines, dehydration, sinus and cluster.

About Headaches

Many forms of headaches have shown to respond positively to osteopathy treatment. However, the types that have shown to respond most favourably are tension and cervicogenic (originating from the neck).

Tension and cervicogenic types are some of the most common types in the UK; accounting for approximately 50-70% of all recorded cases.

These types can effect both males and females equally and can occur at any age. Most commonly, these headaches occur in adolescents and young adults.

Symptoms of Tension / Cervicogenic Headaches:

- Typically both sides of the head
- Pressure / tension at the back and / or at the front of the head (band like)
- Pain that often travels from top of shoulder blade to base of skull
- Mild to moderate pain level
- Lasting hours to days
- Not associated with nausea (unless very severe)
- Sensitivity to light and sound may be present, but not always
- Can often wake up with symptoms.

Typical Causes of Headaches

Typically these headaches are caused by an accumulation of factors: excessive tension in the neck and shoulder muscles, stress, straining the eyes, smoking, poor postural habits, fatigue and reduced mobility of the neck and upper back.

Although not having a serious impact on ones health, these headaches can be a frustrating distraction that reduces productivity and promotes negative moods. According to the International Headache Society, these conditions can have a large negative socio-economic impact.

How Can Osteopathy Help with Headaches

Recent research evidence has shown that osteopathy treatment is MORE effective than drug therapy (painkillers) alone. Osteopathy can help reduce the frequency and intensity of your headaches; commonly eliminating them completely.

At DW Osteopathy our osteopaths will initially diagnose the type of headache and ascertain the likely causative factors. This is followed by applying  specific manual techniques to the neck and upper back in order to reduce muscle tension and improve joint mobility.

Treatment is always accompanied with postural advice and specific exercises to improve symptoms and prolong optimum health.

If you are experiencing headaches, don't hesitate to give us a call and we will advise you on the best course of action.

"I came to see Daniel with daily headaches, alongside neck pain and upper back pain. I was using painkillers everyday just to get by. I was amazed to experience an immediate improvement after the first session! After a few more sessions and completing the exercises he gave me to improve my posture and flexibility, I am now headache free (and best of all painkiller free)! I would strongly recommend this service to anyone experiencing regular headaches."
