About Neck Pain

The neck is formally known as the cervical (serve-eye-cull) spine. It is made up of seven individual bony segments called vertebra. These vertebral segments are separated by shock absorbing tissues called intervertebral discs and held in place by various ligaments, tendons and muscles.

The cervical spine has a very demanding and integral role; it supports and moves the head whilst being the most flexible area of the spine. That means that the neck supports and moves a very heavy object over a large range of motion; something that requires strength and stability.

Conditions of the Neck

As the cervical spine is just an extension of the rest of the spine (upper and lower back) it is vulnerable to the same problems. For example, muscle strain, ligament or tendon sprain, slipped disc, joint irritation, arthritis and nerve impingement (trapped nerve).

Neck pain is one of the most common symptoms presented to an osteopath, with people describing "trapped nerves", "stiffness" or "general aches and pains". Neck related discomforts are the second most common complaint seen by an osteopath, with lower back pain being the most common.

Common Neck Pain Symptoms

A commonly reported symptom of people with neck discomfort is a sharp sensation on one side of the neck that often feels like something has moved out of place, or like a nerve has become trapped or pinched. This description is often due to joint irritation; when the head is moved, the irritated joint attempts to move, thus producing the sharp pain. As osteopaths see this type of presentation on a large scale, we are proficient at identifying the irritated joint and providing treatment to alleviate the pain.

Pain in the neck can vary in intensity and location from person to person. Pain can start as a mild ache with moderate stiffness, all the way to a debilitating intense sharp pain that causes significant or complete loss of all head movements. In some severe cases the nerves within the neck can become pinched or irritated causing pain, tingling or numbness to travel down the arm.

Causes of Neck Pain

Neck pain can arise from physically traumatic onsets, or from seemingly unknown causes. Patients commonly report they simply woke up one morning with the pain and now it will not subside. The most likely explanation for this unknown cause is the activity the patient undertook during the previous day or night. Often a combination of small independent factors can build up to predispose individuals to having neck pain; eg poor posture and excessive desk based work. Therefore making it more likely that someone could irritate their neck from seemingly trivial activities.

In traumatic cases, any forced or involuntary head movements could cause irritation the soft tissues within the neck, resulting in pain; eg whiplash, rugby and a violent fall. Independent factors will still play a role in traumatic injuries with regards to severity of the injury and recovery time.
