What is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor?

osteopath

Before answering this question...

As an osteopath, it is likely my opinion is biased, but the general consensus is that an osteopath and a chiropractor are more similar than different:

  • The objectives of both treatments are to relieve common aches and pains and to improve range of motion
  • Both therapies treat joints and soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments)
  • Both osteopaths and chiropractors use a combination of observation and touch to assess and diagnose conditions
  • Both therapies are safe and should be approached without fear
  • Both therapies are regulated by separate governing bodies, similar to doctors, to ensure all practitioners stay up to date with current research

What are the practical differences between the treatments?

Chiropractors tend to focus mainly (but not exclusively) on the alignment of the spine. Where-as Osteopaths view the body as 'a unit'; assessing the functionality of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joints and the spine to see how this has a compensatory effect on the overall function.

Osteopaths tend to use a variety of techniques to influence the body’s own natural healing system; techniques include muscle stretching and massage, tendon/ligament work, joint articulation and joint manipulation.

Chiropractors also do soft tissue work, but mostly perform adjustments on the vertebrae, similar to osteopathic manipulation, to facilitate optimal nerve transmission.

What are the differences between appointments?

Chiropractic appointments tend to be shorter (in most cases) as they primarily focus on adjustment techniques which are quicker to carry out. Osteopaths, on the other hand, spend more time with their patients per visit.

Frequency of appointments for osteopaths tend to be spaced out over a longer period of time, whereas Chiropractors tend to see patients more frequently.

Which conditions/symptoms best suit chiropractic or osteopathy?

Chiropractors and Osteopaths generally treat the same types of issues, you could see either therapist for a variety of aches and pains throughout the body; including muscle, joint, tendon and ligamentous injury.

Generally, for both therapies, and this is true for DW Osteopathy, the majority of cases relate to back and neck pain. As osteopaths are more broad in their assessment we will probably see more issues related to the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle; but chiropractors are just as equipped to treat such issues.

When in pain, how will I know which therapy to choose?

In truth, the two professions are more similar than what they are different. A good therapist from either discipline will have the appropriate tools to perform a thorough assessment, make a diagnosis and provide effective treatment - maybe even an exercise programme.

Each practitioner, within their own professions, will be slightly different. As there are so many assessment and treatment options available to the therapist, each will have their preferred method. Some practitioners will also vary in intensity; some appearing to perform techniques stronger, whilst others can be softer and more subtle.

The most important aspect about visiting any manual therapists (osteopath, chiropractor or physiotherapist) is to make sure you have full confidence in your practitioner. Do they have your best interest at heart? Do you get on with your practitioner? Do they listen to what you have to say? Do they perform the type treatment that YOU want?

Keep these questions in mind when you attend your initial consultation.
