What to expect from DW Osteopathy Treatments
Return to optimum health
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathy, founded by Andrew Taylor Still in the 19th century, uses manual therapy to diagnose and treat aches and pains throughout the body. Osteopathic treatment uses hands-on techniques to ascertain the health and functionality of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints from head to toe.
Treatment may include physical manipulation, stretching and massage, all with the aim of increasing the mobility of joints; relieving muscle tension and enhancing the blood supply to soft tissues. Your osteopath may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
One of the fundamental principles of osteopathy is that 'the body is a unit'. This simple concept describes the notion that no single part of the body functions in isolation: everything is connected.
With this principle in mind, osteopathy approaches pain and dysfunction with a holistic view of the body. Rather than simply analysing the area of complaint, an osteopath will also assess the surrounding joints and muscles for dysfunction: promoting an enduring level of optimal health.
"Effective, systematic and holistic treatment."
The treatment offered by an osteopath complements that offered by chiropractors and physiotherapists. At DW Osteopathy, we combine our extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology with a passion and dedication for restoring the health of our patients.

Osteopathy Training
An osteopath undergoes extensive training, lasting at least 4 years. During this time they are trained to pay close attention to all aspects of a patient's pain, posture and bodily movements. The skills and expertise of an osteopath, essential to diagnosis, recovery and pain prevention, never truly stop developing throughout their career.
Continued Training and Regulation:
The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) ensures that all osteopaths registered in the UK are kept up to date with the latest research by making continued clinical practical development a mandatory annual process. This ensures that the treatment they offer is kept as relevant and as effective as possible.
How Can Osteopathy Improve Quality of Life
To us, osteopathic treatment is not only about reducing and eliminating discomfort; we are fundamentally concerned with improving quality of life. We seek to improve our patient’s movement and function, and focus on preventing injuries and aches recurring.
Your osteopath will discuss how your occupation, physical activities, recreational pastime and general lifestyle contribute to your overall physical health.
By educating our patients about the underlying structural strengths and weaknesses of their bodies, we believe we can empower them to minimise the risk of issues arising, significantly reduce recovery time when issues do occur and remain at optimum health once achieved.
